salty single malt

salt. the one mineral that makes our lives a whole lot more zestier.
combine that with single malt and we have the makings of a wonderful evening. there are salty single malts such as bowmore's surf but old pulteney is the bee's knees in single malts tinged with smoke and salt.
that good-lah!
actually had the pinkish amber old pulteney 12 year old sometime ago and had a tot of it over the past week, refreshing my mind and palate with its moderately intense salty sea air dominating its bouquet.
which is no surprise of course as the pulteney distillery is the most northerly distillery on the scottish mainland and for the longest time only accessible by sea with the barley brought in by sea and the whisky casks and bottles shipped out by boat.
heck, even the distillery workers worked as herring fishermen in their spare time or was it the other way around.
all in all, the entire process with its maritime theme has seeped into the whisky from bouquet to taste.
and for that matter, the 40 percent alcohol by volume whisky has a dry finish with more than a tinge of saltiness working hand in glove with some sherry notes.
mmmmmm... maritime malt!
